Long-Lost Campus

Last night I was trolling through my camera because it hasn’t been charged in months when I came across some pictures of campus I’d forgotten I’d even taken. If you’ve read this blog since, well yesterday, you know that I’m missing college so much right now it hurts to even think about. I never thought I’d feel that way, but here I am. It wasn’t clear to me what I wanted after graduation until I didn’t have it anymore – I want the University of South Carolina to be in my life still, I want their MFA program in creative writing, I want to be there in the midst of all the people, historic buildings, and trees. I want to try sitting under a tree again to read in the Horseshoe; I want to write in my journal at a black iron table on the roof of Gambrell Hall; I want to curl up against a window in a booth in the Colloquium like I used to do during breaks. Forget about the loser football players who can’t get over their high school hey-days. I’m going to be the loser English major who wanders around campus like a creepy person pretending I’m still matriculating. Just kidding, I wouldn’t do that. I don’t think…

Anyways, I wanted to share these pictures with you, because it gives some visual insight into the way I viewed the campus. When I wasn’t busy being moody and angry at it, I could actually slow down to appreciate it and enjoy its beauty.

Well, there you are. Some of them are probably a little blurry, because I was most likely walking while taking these pictures. I was probably on my way from a class to work. I am determined that one day I will be back there. I don’t know if I will be studying, working, or (fingers crossed) teaching (or, hey, all three!), but it is my goal. I’d really like to be involved with the literary scene in downtown Columbia with the university, so hopefully I can somehow find a way to make that happen. Until then I will just pine over these pictures.
